EXPRESSIONS OF SUGGESTING AND OFFERING SOMETHING

XI WAJIB - SEMESTER GANJIL



A.  Tujuan Pembelajaran

Ketika dan setelah mengikuti proses pembelajaran, siswa diharapkan:

·      Menunjukkan rasa antusias dan semangat mengikuti pembelajaran.

·     Menunjukkan perilaku santun dan peduli dalam berkomunikasi interpersonal dengan guru dan teman.

·      Menyimak dan menirukan teks pendek terkait saran dan tawaran yang dilakukanoleh guru.

·      Menentukan modal yang tepat untuk digunakan terkait saran dan tawaran.

· Mampu mengucapkan ungkapan saran dan tawaran terhadap beberapa situasitermasukmelakukanpengamatandilingkungansekitar, yang kemudian dipresentasikan.

·      Melakukan refleksi tentang proses dan hasil belajarnya.


THE MAIN MATERIAL

According to Oxford English Dictionary, the word “suggest /səˈdʒest/” is in the verbs’ class means to put forward an idea or a plan for other people to think about. Suggest can also be understood as propsing something to other people, it can be accepted or refused. On the other hand, the noun “suggestion” is an abstract noun and can be in form of solution, advice, plan, and idea.

For example:

1.    Let’s do this duty.

2.    Let’s go home.

 

The two sentences above explain that one speaker out of some speakers roles as the suggester who call his friends to do the duty and go home. Let us, or let’s in short is a phrase of making suggestion.

 

The following expressions or gambits are used when someone is making suggestions:

Let’s ......

Why don’t we .....

We could .....

What about .....

I suggest that ....

 

And you might want to change them into:

I think .....

I don’t think .....

 

The examples:

1.    Let’s join the party.

2.    Why don’t you wear your face mask before going out?

3.    We could do the task on website.

4.    What about driving my car for going on holiday?

5.    I suggest that we finish them at once.

6.    You need to stay at home during the pandemic.

7.    I think you should buy this grammar book?

8.    I don’t think you should complete all exercises.

Offer /ˈɔfər/ means to give something physical or abstract to someone, which can be taken as a gift or a trade. Another definition, offer means to give help. It can be taken or refused, and still another deinition of offer that it can be in terms of food, money, solutions, friendship, or a bargain.

 

For examples:

1.    Shall I take you home?

2.    May I brrow your pen?

 

The following expressions or gambits are used when someone is ofering something:

Would you .....

How about I .....

 

For examples:

May I give a hand?

Can I help you?

Shall I bring a pack of sweets for you?

Would you like some sugar?

I will do the washing, if you like.

 

Particularly when you are the host, you may want to make polite offers to your guests:

o    Would you like a magazine to read?

o    Can I get you a coffee?

o    Can I offer you something to drink?

o    How about something to eat? I could make some sandwiches.

o    If you'd like to use/​If you need the bathroom, it's the second door on the right.

o    Feel free to go upstairs and have a rest if you'd like to.

Responses:

o    Yes, please. A glass of orange juice would be lovely.
